Our Story

Thirty years of frying the same proper breakfast.

A small London cafe, a steady grill, and a plate that has not changed since 1996. This is the story of how we got here and why we never left.

Since 1996

It started with one grill and one idea.

In 1996 we took a narrow shopfront in London, put a flat grill in the back, and started cooking the breakfast we grew up eating. Eggs cracked to order, bacon laid flat until the fat crisps, sausages turned slowly, beans kept warm in a pan, tomatoes cut in half and grilled until they blister.

The room held a handful of tables. The menu was a single card. The kettle was always on. People came in for a cup of tea and stayed for the plate, and they came back the next morning, and the morning after that.

Thirty years on, the grill is the same one we started with, the room is still small, and the plate is still the point of the whole place.

What We Stand For

Three things we have never changed.

Cooked to order

Nothing sits under a lamp. Every egg is cracked when you order it, every rasher goes on the grill for you, and the toast comes off while the butter can still melt into it.

Proper ingredients

Back bacon, pork sausages, real butter, and beans done the way they should be. The same butchers and the same brands we started buying from thirty years ago.

A steady routine

We open at nine and close at ten, every day. The grill is hot by the time you sit down, the tea is poured before you ask, and the plate comes out the way it always has.

The People

A small team that knows the grill by heart.

We are a family-run cafe. The same hands have been working this grill for most of the thirty years we have been open, and the faces behind the counter are the ones who have been pouring your tea since the start.

We know the regulars by their order, we know when the morning rush hits, and we know exactly how long to leave a rasher on the grill before it turns crisp at the edges and stays soft in the middle.

It is a small room and a short staff, and that is the way we like it. Everyone who works here can cook the whole plate, and everyone who walks in is treated like they came back for the same one.

The Plate

Why the full English, and why nothing else.

The full English breakfast is the one plate that does not need improving. Eggs, bacon, sausage, beans, tomato, mushrooms, toast, and tea. Every element has a job, and the plate only works when all of them are done right and arrive together, hot.

We have spent thirty years getting the timing of that plate down to a routine. The sausage goes on first, the bacon follows, the eggs go in when the toast is nearly done, and the beans are kept warm the whole way through.

It is not a complicated thing to cook. It is a complicated thing to cook the same way, every morning, for three decades. That is what we do.

The Room

Small, steady, and built for breakfast.

The cafe is a single room with a handful of tables, a counter along the pass, and a window that lets the morning in. The chairs are mismatched, the condiment caddy is full, and the kettle lives where everyone can hear it.

We never expanded, never opened a second site, never tried to be anything other than the place you come to for a proper breakfast. The room is the size it has always been, and that is part of why it feels the way it does.

Walk in, find a seat, and the plate will be on its way. That is how it has worked since 1996.

Thirty Years

A short history of the cafe.

1996

The doors open

A single grill, a short menu, and a kettle that never stops. The first plate goes out at nine in the morning.

2004

The regulars settle in

Eight years in, the morning crowd knows its table, its tea, and its order. The routine is set.

2015

The same grill

Two decades on, the original flat grill is still the heart of the kitchen. Seasoned, scarred, and still cooking.

2026

Thirty years

Three decades of the same plate, the same room, and the same nine o'clock start. Still here, still frying.

Come In

Pull up a chair and order the plate.

We are open every day from nine in the morning to ten at night. Walk in for breakfast, or book a table and we will have the kettle on for you.
